Een F18 Hornet waagt de landing
Voor onze collectie ‘Geo-Engineering’ past dit patent uit 2008 voor orkaanmanipulatie mooi in het rijtje: Met tweehonderd F18 straaljagers vlieg je richting oog van de orkaan. Dan zet je de nabrander open. Door al vliegend de binnenkant van het oog te verwarmen rem je de convectie af (opwaartse luchtstroom). Zo kun je de windsnelheid laten afnemen.

De bedenkers, stellen dat eerdere probeersels inclusief Project Stormfury van de Amerikaanse overheid nooit het gehoopte resultaat brachten. Ze noemen verder een aantal andere probeersels, die in hun ogen te futuristisch zijn:
Cloud seeding is a known process for artificially modifying the weather by injecting a composition into a cloud for formation of an ice freezing nuclei. Silver iodide is a well known substance used for cloud seeding.
The Stormfury project carried out by the US Government for several years focused on hurricane formation suppression by means of aerial dispersion of silver iodide. This project was evaluated as a failure and cancelled.

Een ander patent zou zelfs diepere waterlagen in de oceaan willen mixen met de warme bovenlaag. Dan zou de motor achter het ontstaan van orkanen (Zeewater boven 25 graden) worden geremd.
U.S. Pat. No. 4,470,544 discloses cooling of the surface of the sea in the summer time by mixing surface water with cooler deep water, this being achieved by pumping water from a lower level of the sea to the upper level. This causes reduction in the heat lost during the summer whereby the amount of heat stored in the body of water during the summer is increased causing wintertime modification of the weather over the continental arid zone.
Daarin zie je al dat veel patenten onuitvoerbaar zijn. Hoeveel pompen zou je moeten installeren met hoeveel schepen om grote delen van de Mexicaanse Golf de waterlagen te laten mixen. Een ander idee kwam van William Gray; Verbrandt grote hoeveelheden petroleum om roet te produceren. Die roetwolken zouden in het oog van de orkaan tot absorptie van zonlicht leiden en dus warmte.
Zo zou het oog van de orkaan van boven opwarmen, zodat de convectiepomp (warmte die omhoog stroomt langs oog) afremt en dus de windsnelheid.

Butterfly-effect
Dit patent om met F18 straaljagers een orkaan van koers te veranderen, bouwt voort op onderzoek dat de NOAA en de NASA al deden. Volgens het ‘butterfly-effect’ zou een klein duwtje in een chaotisch systeem al een groot effect kunnen hebben:
The present invention relates a method for controlling hurricanes by raising temperature in the eye and in the outflow layer. Outflow is the air that exits the eye of the hurricane. Air temperature within the eye and in the outflow of a hurricane is raised by flying scores of jet planes with afterburners in the structure.
Small changes in temperature on a large scale bring in large changes in other variables on the smaller scale to change the direction and speed of the hurricane. This is a practical and environmentally safe method which can be adapted immediately without any huge investment. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Organization and other US agencies fly planes through hurricanes routinely to do research and collect scientific data.

Het zou dus haalbaar zijn om met straaljagers door een orkaan te vliegen. De NOAA heeft ook haar eigen team van Hurricane Hunters die door het oog van de storm vliegen voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Bovendien doet
In recent research supported by the NASA Institute for Advanced Concept, Ross Hoffman advanced his theory of “chaotic” system. This theory of so-called “butterfly effect” shows that a small nudge in a chaotic system, for example hurricane, can produce chain reaction big enough to knock the hurricane off its course and also reduce its strength.
Computer simulations of small changes in temperature showed control of track and intensity of hurricanes. One plausible approach suggested for actual hurricane control was to use microwave energy to heat up selected portions of hurricane using a ring of solar satellites. However, this solution is still far away many years for practical use.
Bizarre patenten bestaan voor orkaanmanipulatie
Ook dit patent heeft het uiteindelijk niet gehaald. De status van het patent staat nu op ‘abandoned’, maar ja… je moet wat wanneer je leeft in een regio die door destructieve stormen geteisterd wordt. Voer voor complotdenkers blijft natuurlijk: Als ze in staat zijn om een orkaan van koers te veranderen, kunnen ze dat dan ook ten kwade doen? Richting gebieden waar extra schade optreedt…
Bovendien, je zou met veel ijs ook de temperatuur in het oog laten dalen zodat de windsnelheid juist toeneemt…Het lijkt vooralsnog dat pogingen voor orkaanmanipulatie een wisselend succes kennen.
