Of juist de woeste natuur waar het lijkt dat mensen nooit enige rol in speelden..De IUCN stelde een categorie op voor beschermenswaardige natuur genaamd ‘wildernis’; Dat zijn gebieden waar geen mensen leven.

Hun categorie 1b luidt aldus:

…large-scale sites in which ecological processes can function with minimal human disturbance. These sites are defined as ‘Protected areas that are usually large, unmodified or slightly modified areas, retaining their natural character and influence, without permanent or significant human habitation,which are protected and managed so as to preserve their natural condition.

Menselijke aanwezigheid wordt hier alleen op prijs gesteld in primitieve, of recreatieve vorm:

In fact, wilderness protected areas can be defined as places that are biologically intact, or largely intact, with which humans have a relationship (Kormos, 2008). That relationship can include the many Indigenous Peoples and Tribes live in these areas. It can also include rural or urban residents seeking solitude, recreation or other human benefits in wilderness protected areas.

De verwijzing naar Kormos is Cyril Kormos, commissaris bij Wild Europe, sinds 2022 een stichting gevestigd bij IUCN in Amsterdam; Hij richte een eigen ngo op in de Verenigde Staten die het ook voor wildernis opneemt, Wild Heritage.
